Employee Volunteering

Employee volunteering is designed to enable employees to partake in a voluntary opportunity at a time to suit them, eg, after work, at weekends, during a career break or sabbatical; and with the full support of their employer, during working hours.

By supporting employee volunteering there are benefits to both the employer and the employee. The employee has a chance to develop personal skills such as organisational, planning, time management, communication, presentation and teamwork. They can often enjoy exposure to a wider range of tasks than they would normally get in their paid employment, for example, planning, budgeting, coaching and training leading to increased confidence and self-esteem.

Successful Employee Volunteering Programmes fulfill three key criteria:

  • Addressing community needs
  • Reflecting employee interests and skills
  • Meeting business priorities

Apart from supporting their personnel in employee volunteering, employers can also support community need by:

  • Donating goods, services and surplus office equipment such as desks, filing cabinets and computers
  • Matched giving
  • Use of premises and resource
